The Future of Waste Sorting Begins in Childhood

Proper waste sorting starts with a habit, and the best time to build that habit is during childhood.

Our colleague Maria Jurkáček in Hamburger Recycling Slovakia has launched waste-sorting workshops for children in kindergartens and primary schools, helping the next generation understand recycling in a fun way.

Drawing on everyday experience at recycling and waste collection centers, the idea emerged to introduce children to the world of waste management in a simple, engaging, and playful way. Workshops for kindergarten and elementary school students combine brief educational presentations with hands-on waste sorting activities, quizzes, and interactive exercises.

Children can learn which items belong in which containers, bring objects they no longer need, and work together to find the correct disposal or recycling solution. Along the way, they often discover that waste management is much more than just colored bins.

What's the goal?

The goal is to show them what happens to waste after collection, which materials can be reused or recycled, and why it is equally important to avoid creating unnecessary waste in the first place.

The workshops also include school collection drives for cardboard, newspapers, and magazines, as well as educational materials filled with ideas on how to give unwanted cardboard a new life.

„The greatest reward is the children's enthusiasm. When ordinary waste sorting becomes a game, questions start coming one after another, creating the perfect opportunity to share the most important message: the new generation has the power to influence how much waste is produced around us.“

A big thank you to Maria for turning environmental education into action. Growing a more sustainable future starts with the youngest generation. We will.
